Uberspace-mail and mutt

After getting more and more familiar and feeling quite comfortable in the terminal emulator, I thought After the my transition from mainly gui-applications to the command line, I got finally fed up with tunderbird. Not that thunderbird is a particular bad email client, but it isn’t a very good one either (not that a good one actually exists…). And after all, i had no intention of creating/modifying a theme to match my solarized-dark everything colorscheme, it was time to leave thunderbird behind.

The fact that i only use my gmail account as an aggregator for spam and old accounts i didn’t come around converting to my main email adress, solely relying on inbox did not solve that feature. And after I made the initial decision not to use google for everything, forwarding that my emails to gmail, just to be able to use inbox was kinda pointless. So i decided i’ll try mutt.

So, after a few hours of reading, try-and-error and different error messages, here’s my muttrc:

#username
set imap_user = "<email>"
set smtp_url = "smtp://<uberspace-username>@<server>.uberspace.de:587/"

#from:
set from = "<email>"
#realname:
set realname = "<realname>"

#folder-configurations
set header_cache = "~/.mutt/cache/headers"
set message_cachedir = "~/.mutt/cache/"
set certificate_file = "~/.mutt/certificates"

#enable starttlsto
set ssl_starttls=yes
set ssl_force_tls=yes

#inbox configuration
set folder = imap://imap.<domain>:143/
set spoolfile = +INBOX
mailboxes = +INBOX
unset imap_passive
set imap_keepalive = 300
set mail_check = 120
set editor = vim

Some important hints:

  • The imap_user is the full email adress
  • smtp_url is your <username>@<server>.uberspace.de:587
  • remember to enable starttls
  • Follow the advice for ports on the uberspace-wiki
